David’s passion for building began at age 16 with a pickaxe and a shovel. A high schooler who needed a summer job, he joined a local contractor as a laborer digging trenches. He later bought some tools and learned carpentry, increasing his skills and value. While in college, he continued to work part-time in construction and quickly advanced into field supervision roles. After earning his civil engineering technology degree from Old Dominion University, he spent the next 20 years building a successful career in project management for several prominent Virginia contractors. Fast-forward another 20 years to the biggest project he’s built to date – his own company. Along with brother Steve (now retired), the two teamed up in the late 1990’s to form Norman Company Inc General Contractors. Now in business more than two decades, this family-centric firm stands highly respected for its quality work, enduring values and lasting relationships. Today, David focuses on project development and pre-construction activities, while keeping a hand on the helm and his eyes on the horizon. He is a past-president of the Associated General Contractors of Virginia and president of his local Ruritan club. He and his wife Susan have four sons and five grandchildren and live on a small farm in King & Queen County. In the fall, if David’s not in the office, he’s probably in the woods sitting in a tree stand with a muzzle loader and a pocket full of Werther’s.
